Great Smoky Mountains National Park

All of the images on this page are photographs that I took during a trip to the Smoky Mountains - there is no artwork featured here.

In July of 2008, I enjoyed a second visit to the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.  Below are some photographic highlights from the trip.

Above and below: the Smokies live up to their reputation as one of the mistiest locations in America.

A view near the 5,000 elevation on the North Carolina side of the park.

Stormy weather near the summit at Clingman's Dome.  With thunder booming overhead, I had to run from a ferocious downpour of rain only moments after taking this shot.

A fog-filled valley in the Tremont area, on the trail to the falls of Spruce Flats.

A trail through the Tremont area of the park.  The place seems perpetually misty, especially in the morning hours.

Rhododendron in full bloom.  These flower clusters appear in great abundance during the summer, often filling the forest with bright color.

The upper falls of Spruce Flats.

Below, other views along the same stream.

A 19th-century cabin preserved in the Cades Cove area, just one of many historic structures in the park.

Below, interior of a similar cabin.

Walkway to the entrance of the John Cable mill in Cades Cove.  The mill still functions, grinding cornmeal for the entertainment of park visitors.  The mill is powered by its large water-wheel, seen below:

After a very stormy week in the park, some sunshine made an appearance on our last day:
